Reading and sources

Reading paths for newcomers and researchers

Three connected approaches through a large body of chapters and terminology.

Follow the life

Begin with the biography and timeline, then teachers, women and the city pages. Continue to Rūḥ al-quds and Shams volume I. Ask who is speaking, when the event occurred, and how the account relates to the book containing it.

Follow the texts

Read the Futūḥāt introduction, then choose a clearly defined subject such as love or time. Record edition and page, consulting the image when quoting. For poetry, read the poem before its commentary. For the Fuṣūṣ, start with the base text and one identifiable commentary before comparing several.

Follow a research question

Begin with attribution and manuscript documentation, then frame a limited question whose vocabulary can be traced. Distinguish quotation, summary and inference in your notes. When moving to modern cosmology and research, identify what comes from the historical text and what the contemporary model adds. Sources gathers the main links.
