The Futūḥāt: structure and composition

A guide connecting the author’s life with chapters, page images and textual sources.

From Mecca to the final revision

Composition began in Mecca around 598 AH and continued through journeys and residence until the first version was completed in 629 AH. Ibn al-ʿArabī rewrote it between 632 and 636 AH, adding, removing and revising material. Shams al-Maghrib discusses the beginning and Chapter 1’s encounter, distinguishing the author’s account of inspiration from the long process of writing.

560 chapters and several routes

The work has 560 chapters alongside its introductions. Worship, ethics, letters, knowledge, sainthood, names, cosmology and humanity intersect throughout it. Thematic reading is useful when context is retained. Clear entry points include time in Chapter 59, knowledge in 177, love in 178, names in 558 and counsels in 560.

Using Futmak’s reading tools

Start with the chapter directory and open text and image as needed. Record edition, volume, printed page and chapter: a website record number is not a printed reference. Do not assume every digital passage in the Konya reader is an exact transcription of its image; consult source and alignment notes. Continue with manuscripts and the practical reading paths.
