Because God occupied him with crying over his sin, witnessing his misstep, and looking at it in his book, he was astonished about the fact that that remorse would give him promotion with God, for He did not give him good news of the acceptance of repentance, so he was certain that the misstep had occurred, judging him to be broken and ashamed of what he had committed, and if God did not hold him accountable for that sin, then the lure would have resulted in goodness. And evil, and in the happy and the miserable, and in the city of Fez I met a man with a depressed appearance, as if he was serving in a furnace, so I asked Abu Abbas Al-Hissar, who was one of the senior sheikhs, about him. I saw him sitting with him and yearning for him. He said to me, “This is a man who was in a position, but then he fell from it, so he was in this position, and he was so ashamed and broken that he had to remain silent about it.” The words of creation, so I continued to soothe him with such medicines and remove from him the disease of that slip with such treatment. He had empowered me with his soul, so I did not relieve him until that medicine spread through his organs, freeing his vitality and opening for him in the eyes of his heart a door to accepting it. However, modesty required it, and so should there be mistakes. The major sins usually descend to permissible matters and nothing else, and on the rare occasion major sins occur among them. It was said of Abu Yazid al-Bistami, may God be pleased with him, that he disobeys the knowledgeable, so he said, “And God’s command was decreed, destined, and intended.”
