Start with the text’s vocabulary
Ibn al-ʿArabī writes of the Real and creation, existence and possibility, manifestation and names. How are diverse beings and their relations understood alongside their dependence on the Real? The question requires attention to distinctions and levels rather than a slogan equating everything or denying differentiation.
The term and its reception
Waḥdat al-wujūd became prominent in explanations and controversies concerning the Akbarian tradition. The commentaries assembled on ibnalarabi.com discuss whether it is Ibn al-ʿArabī’s own technical term and offer different interpretations. Identify the speaker: the author, a commentator summarizing him, or a critic objecting to him.
Careful comparisons
Translating the term simply as indwelling, material unity or a slogan of tolerance cannot explain the conceptual relationships. Begin with names, dependence and manifestation, comparing specific passages. Connecting unity and multiplicity to the Single Monad Model is a contemporary interpretive and research route, introduced in Modern studies, not a literal attribution to every older text.
