Praise be to God, I do not seek any substitute for it *** but rather the provision is divided according to discretion [ The mother of scientific claims and their bearing on the truth ] Know that the mother of the demands are four, which are: Is a question about existence and what? It is a question about the truth expressed by essence and how, and it is a question about the state. Why is it a question about cause and cause? People disagreed about what is correct to ask about the truth with it, and they agreed on the word “is it” because it is conceivable to ask about the truth with it, and they disagreed about the rest. Some of them forbade it and some allowed it. What was forbidden were the philosophers and a group of the sect who forbade that with reason, and some of them forbade that. Sharia [ It is forbidden to apply “what”, “how”, and “why” to God with reason. ] So as for The way in which they were prevented by reason is that they said in a certain question that it is a question about essence, so it is a question about the limit, and the Truth, Glory be to Him, has no limit, since the limit is composed of a genus and a separation. [Page 194 of the Cairo edition] And this is forbidden with regard to the Truth because it is itself. It is not composed of a matter in which participation occurs, so it is in kind, and a matter in which excellence occurs, and then there is nothing but God and creation, and there is no correspondence between God and the world, nor the Maker and the made, so there is no participation, there is no gender, and there is no separation. And the one who permitted that by reason and forbade it by law said, “I do not say.
