As for the sandals of Moses, peace be upon him, they are not these, for his Lord said to him, “Take off your sandals, for you are in the holy valley.” We narrated that they were from the skin of a dead donkey, so three things were combined. One thing is the skin, which is the apparent matter, meaning do not stand with the apparent matter in all circumstances. The second is dullness, as it is attributed to the donkey. The third is that it is dead and not slaughtered, and death is ignorance. And if you are dead, you do not understand what you say or what is said to you. The person who speaks to him must be in the capacity of someone who understands what he says and what is said to him, so he is alive in heart and aware of the context of speech, delving into the meanings intended by the one who is speaking to him with it.
