For He, Glory be to Him, does not accept the exaltation of His servants since they are workers, for no one sees exaltation as an action except the ignorant among His servants, for the scholar sees it as knowledge, and if he speaks of it, he only speaks of it in accordance with The aspect of definition is what is commanded upon him in himself, which is his saying and his remembrance, so the effect of his action is [Page 345 of the Cairo edition] only in his knowledge of the transcendence of his Creator, so he took him by word and remembrance from power to action. Perhaps this affected the souls of the listeners who did not believe in God that he was with that description of God. Transcendence

The servant is a veil over the truth, for the apparent effects are only perceived in general and attributed. For the reasons established by the Truth, and for this reason the servant says, “I did, and I did, and I fasted, and I prayed,” and he adds to himself all of his actions, all of them due to his veil from their Creator in him and from him and their course. Just as the slippers became a veil between the one who performs ablution and the delivery of the ablution to the man, and the rule of purity was transferred to the slippers, so also man’s dissociation from his Creator, which is purity and sanctification, for what he was unable to do. The same matter is conveying the effect of that exaltation to the truth because it is exalted in itself. The ruling on the effect of that exaltation is transferred to the exalted person who is exalted.
