[ Ibn Arabi's vision of the Kaaba being built with bricks of silver and gold ] I saw a vision for myself of this type and I took it as good news from God, for it is identical to a prophetic hadith from the Messenger God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, when he gave us a similar example in the prophets , peace be upon them. He, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said, “My example among the prophets is like a man who built a wall and completed it except for one brick, and I was that brick. There is no messenger or prophet after me.” He likened prophecy to a wall, and the prophets to the bricks with which this wall was erected, and it is a very good simile, for the name of the wall here referred to is not valid for its appearance except with brick, so he, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, was the Seal of the Prophets. I was in Mecca in the year five hundred and ninety-nine, and I saw, as a sleeper sees, the Kaaba built of brick, silver and gold, brick of silver. And a brick of gold. The building was completed and nothing remained of it. I was looking at it and its beauty. So I turned to the side that is between the Yemeni corner and the Levantine corner, which is closer to the Levantine corner. I found a place for two bricks, a silver brick and a gold brick, missing from the wall in the two rows in the row [Page 319 of the Cairo edition. ] The highest brick is missing a gold brick, and the next row is missing a silver brick, so I saw myself being imprinted in the place of those two bricks, so I was the eye of a fig.
