And he said to me, “Pray for this.” He said, then he took me and took me from the house, then from the country, and walked with me in a land that I did not know, and I did not know where I was on God’s earth, so God Almighty reminded us of those places, then he returned me to my home where I was. He said, so I said to him, “My brother, what will be the replacement?” Abdala, so he said to me the four that Abu Talib mentioned regarding sustenance, then he named them for me: hunger, staying up late, silence, and seclusion in the heart. Then Abd al-Majid said to me, “This is the mat,” so I prayed on it. This man was one of the eldest among them, and his name is Muadh bin Ashras. As for seclusion, it is for the aspirant to abstain from every reprehensible characteristic and every lowly character. This is his isolation in his state. As for his heart, it is that he isolates himself in his heart from attachment to any of God’s creation, from family, money, children, companions, and everything that prevents him from remembering his Lord in his heart, even from his thoughts, and he only has one concern, which is his attachment to God. As for his feelings, his isolation is in the beginning. The state of being cut off from people and familiarities, either in his home or by traveling on God’s earth. If he is in a city, then in a way that he is not known. If he is not in a city, then he sticks to the coasts and mountains [Page 278 of the Cairo edition] and places far from If people feel comfortable with him and become accustomed to him, and God speaks to him about him, whether they speak to him or not, then let him isolate himself.
