They said, “O our Lord, why did you create us?” He said, “To worship you,” that is, to be subservient before me. They did not see an attribute of oppression, nor of pride that would humiliate them, especially when He said to them, “To humble yourself before Me.” He added the verb to humiliate them, so they increased their arrogance thereby. If he had said to them, “I created you only to humiliate you,” they would have been dismayed and afraid, for it was a word of oppression, so they would hasten to do so. Humiliation poured out of their souls out of fear of this word, just as He said to the heavens and the earth, “Come, willingly or by compulsion.” If he had not said compulsory, then it is a word of oppression wherever it comes. That is why we said: He did not create everything except the Two Heavy Ones, nor did He address them except with the quality of oppression and power. When He told the Two Heavy Ones about the reason for which He brought them into being and created them, they looked at the names. Which they found about, and they did not see a divine name from it that necessitates their taking and punishment if they disobeyed his command and his prohibition and were arrogant in his command, so they did not obey him and disobeyed him, so Adam disobeyed his Lord, and he was the first of people, and Satan disobeyed his Lord, so the violation of these two principles is widespread in all the two great matters. The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, says about Adam when he denied. And he forgot what he had given to David of his life, and he forgot Adam, so his offspring forgot, and Adam denied it, so his offspring denied it, except those whom your Lord has had mercy on, so He protected them, but from arrogance towards God, not from the arrogance of some of them towards one another and against all other creatures, so no one was protected from that to begin with, for God had willed.
