And they said, “We believe in the Lord of the worlds, the Lord of Moses and Aaron,” until the confusion was removed, for if they had stood over the worlds, Pharaoh would have said, “I am the Lord of the worlds.” They meant to me, so they added the Lord of Moses and Aaron, meaning the one to whom Moses and Aaron called. So the problem rose, so Pharaoh threatened them with torment, so they preferred the torment of this world to the torment of the hereafter, and from their words was what God related. As for the common people, they attributed what Moses brought to be similar to what the sorcerers brought, except that he was stronger than them and more knowledgeable about magic through the grasping that appeared from the serpent on the staff of Moses, peace be upon him. They said, “This is great magic.” And the sign of Moses among the sorcerers was nothing but his fear and taking pictures of snakes from ropes and sticks in particular. Such a thing is outside the power of the soul and the properties of the names because of the fear that appeared from Moses the first time, so the action was from God. And when the magicians created confusion in the eyes of the onlookers by making the ropes and sticks appear as serpents in their sight, He wanted the truth to come to them from their door which they know, as God Almighty said: And We clothed them with what they clothe themselves with. God takes into account the occasions when matters are concerned, so He made the staff a snake like the snakes used by the general public, and He confused the magicians with what appeared to be Moses’ fear, so they imagined that he was afraid of snakes, and Moses was in the same matter not.
