( In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful ) (Chapter on the ruling on sleep in invalidating ablution) [The difference of opinion among scholars regarding sleep] < p> The scholars differed regarding sleep in three schools of thought. One who says that it occurred, so they obligated ablution for small or large amounts of it, and one who says that it is not a ritual impurity, so ablution is not required of him unless he is certain of the occurrence, then what invalidates ablution is the occurrence, not sleep, and if he doubts the occurrence, then the doubt has no effect on [Page 355 of Cairo Edition] Purity, for the Sharia did not consider doubt in this matter, and I say so. Whoever says that there is a difference between a little, light sleep, like the Sunnah, does not require ablution from it, and a lot of heavy sleep makes it obligatory to perform ablution. (His wisdom has reached the interior) [The two states of the heart that remove its purity, which is knowledge of God] Know that the heart has a state of heedlessness, that is, little sleep, a state of death, and a sleep that is unable to be alert and pay attention to what God has assigned it to do, such as contemplation, reasoning, and remembrance.
