It is undoubtedly news for every rational person who knows the words, for God has told us that this is forbidden and this is permissible, and therefore God Almighty said in condemnation of those who say about God what He did not say, and do not say, “Why do your tongues describe lies? This is permissible and this is forbidden, so that you may invent a lie against God.” He attached judgment to news because it is news without a doubt, except that it is not within the power of humans in most things to recognize the ugliness of things or their beauty. So if we know the truth in it, we know it. Among them are those whose ugliness is understood by reason in our knowledge, such as lying and the disbelief of the benefactor, and their goodness is reasoned, such as honesty and gratitude to the benefactor, and the fact that sin is related to some types of honesty. The reward relates to some types of lying, for that belongs to God. He gives the reward for whatever evil or goodness He wishes, and that does not indicate the goodness or ugliness of a thing, such as lying to save a believer from destruction, for which a person will be rewarded, even if the lie is ugly in itself, and honesty is like backbiting, a person is sinful, even if the truth is good in it. In itself, that is a legal matter. He gives His bounty to whomever He wishes and withholds it from whomever He wishes, as He said: He singles out for His mercy whom He wills, and God is the Possessor of great bounty.
