To their beginning [ The lower houses and what they give of the upper stations ] As for the lower houses, they are what they give. Physical deeds are among the highest stations, such as prayer, jihad, fasting, and every physical deed, and what psychological deeds also provide, which are exercises, such as enduring harm and being patient with it, being content with a few of the souls’ pleasures, being content with what exists even if it is not sufficient, and withholding oneself from complaining, each of these athletic deeds and strivings has specific results. For every action there is a condition and a place, and the Lawgiver explained some of that to prove what he mentioned about what he was silent about in terms of the difference in results due to the difference in characteristics, and by defining that the voluntary acts of every obligatory act of worship have a characteristic from the characteristic of their obligatory one, and therefore some of them are completed for him if his obligatory one is incomplete. It was reported. In the authentic hadith on the authority of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, he said: The first thing to be looked into from a servant’s work is the prayer, so God says, “Look at my servant’s prayer, whether he completed it or incomplete it. If it was complete, it will be written as complete for him, and if he omitted anything from it, He said, ‘Look, does my servant have any voluntary prayers?’ If he had voluntary prayers.” He said: Complete for My servant his obligatory prayers from his voluntary deeds, then the deeds will be taken according to that.
