And cold, and wet, and dry, but rather from cold and dry, and cold and wet, and hot and wet, and hot and dry, which are the four black humors, phlegm, blood, and bile, as they are in the body of the great world, fire, air, water, and dirt. So God created [Page 153 of the Cairo edition] the body of Adam from clay, which is a mixture of water. With the dust, then he breathed a soul and spirit into it. It was mentioned in the first prophecy in some of the books revealed to a prophet among the Children of Israel, the text of which I will mention now, because there is a need to mention it. The truest reports are what was narrated on the authority of God Almighty, which we narrated on the authority of Maslama bin Waddah, with a chain of transmission attributed to him, and he was one of the people of Cordoba, so he said.
God said in some of what He revealed to the prophets of the Children of Israel, “Indeed, I created Adam from dust and water, and breathed into him a soul and a spirit, and formed his body from the dust, his moisture from the water, his heat from the soul, and his coldness from the spirit.” He said, “Then I made four things in the body after this.” There are other types, one of which does not exist without the other, which are bile, blood, and phlegm. Then I made them dwell in one another, and made the abode of dryness in the black bile, the abode of heat in the yellow bile, the abode of moisture in the blood, and the abode of cold in the phlegm.
