The scholars differed regarding the condition of intention in washing. Some scholars stipulated it, and I say so, and some of them did not stipulate it . Its condition is inward purity, for it is the soul and life of the action, and intention is part of the inner action, so it is necessary, and we have discussed it at the beginning of the chapter, both outwardly and inwardly. Some say that it is obligatory and some say that it is not obligatory. What we go to in this matter is that when washing included ablution, its ruling was based on the fact that he performed ablution in his ablution, not in the sense that he performed ablution. It has not been reported that the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, did not rinse his mouth or blow his nose during his ablution except when performing ablution in it, and I have not seen anyone point out something like this in their disagreement regarding that.
