The Fire is blazing for them, and after that it burns upon them, thus reducing the pain of their torment according to the extent that the fire subsides. God Almighty said, “The more it subsides, We increase their burning.” This indicates that the Fire is undoubtedly tangible, for the Fire is not characterized by this description except by the fact that it arises in bodies, because the reality of the Fire does not accept this description from Where it is itself, neither increase nor decrease, but rather it is the body burned by fire, it is the one that is burned by fire. And if we interpret this verse in the other way, we say the Almighty’s saying: “Whenever it fades,” meaning the fire that is shed on their bodies, “We will increase them,” meaning those who are tormented, in the burning, for He did not say, “We will increase it,” and the meaning of that is that the punishment is turned to their insides, and it is the most severe punishment. Sensory distracts them from moral torment. So if the fire fades in their outward appearance and they find comfort from their senses, God will enable them inwardly to think about the matters they neglected in which, if they had done them, they would have attained happiness. And the illusion of His authority dominates them, so they imagine a torment worse than what they were in, and their torment due to that illusion in their souls will be more severe. Of the coming of the torment associated with the control of the tangible fire over their bodies, and that fire that the illusion gave is the fire that rises to the hearts [Page 322 of the Cairo edition], and it is the one we said about it.
