A sentence in the Futūḥāt may belong to Ibn al-Arabi’s exposition, a quotation, an objection, a reported conversation, or a reply. Before treating it as a standalone proposition, identify who is speaking and what question is being answered. Read at least the paragraph on either side and, where necessary, the preceding page.
Keep a short record of the chapter, printed volume and page, edition, and the opening words of the passage. If you use an English rendering, also record the Arabic terms that carry the argument. A change of English vocabulary can hide a distinction or create one that is absent from the source.
Use the manuscript image to check a disputed word. Use the chapter directory to recover the broader subject. Editorial notes, translations, and thematic introductions should remain distinguishable from Ibn al-Arabi’s own wording.
