Perhaps you differentiate between God and the Most Merciful when presented to you in the Qur’an, the Almighty’s saying, “Worship God,” and they did not say, “And what is God?” And when they were told, “Prostrate to the Most Merciful,” they said, “What is the Most Merciful?” That is why the adjective was more preferable to the substitution for some people, and for others, the substitution is more appropriate for His Almighty’s saying, “Say, ‘Call upon God’ or ‘Call upon the Most Merciful.’” Whatever you call upon, to Him belong the most beautiful names, so He made them for the essence, and the Arabs did not deny the word of God, for they are the ones who say, “We worship them only so that they may bring us closer to God,” so they knew it.
