And when God knew this from them in the formation of their souls, He took that amount of money out of their hands. Rather, He took all the money out of their hands. Then God Almighty said, “And spend of that in which He has made you independent.” That is, this money is yours of it, except what you spend of it, which is disposing of it as a form of stewards, and money belongs to God, and you are not miserly. With it, you are stingy with what you do not possess, because you are successors in it, and what you have of it is trustworthy. So warn them that they are left behind in it, in order to make it easy for them to give alms out of mercy for them. God says, “Just as we commanded you to spend from the wealth that you are appointed successors in, we commanded our Messenger and our deputies among you to take from this wealth that we have in your hands a known amount.” We called it zakat, the good of which is returned to you.
