We narrated on the authority of Ali bin Abi Talib, may God be pleased with him, that he said: The Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, advised me, and he said, “O Ali, I give you a will, so keep it, for you will remain well as long as you keep my will, O Ali. The believer has three signs: prayer, fasting, and zakat, and the one who is obedient has three signs.” He flatters when he witnesses, backbites when he is absent, and gloats over misfortune. The oppressor has three signs: he oppresses those below him with victory and those above him with disobedience, and he shows injustice. The hypocrite has three signs: he is active when he is with people, he is lazy when he is alone, and he loves to be praised in all matters. The hypocrite has three signs: he tells a lie, if he promises he breaks it, and if he is entrusted he betrays it.
